On Saturday, July 10, 2010 both Quik SCience teams from the Marine Science Academy were treated to a trip to Catalina Island (all expenses paid). Mrs. Escajeda picked up students at MDR at 6:00 a.m. and met other Mariners at the USC research lab in San Pedro, where they would all hop on a boat and head for the USC Wrigley Institute. The day looked bleak (as most of the summer has been), but that didn't matter, because everyone was determined to have a good time, no matter what the day was like!
After arriving at the research facility, the students were given a short orientation on the basics of kayaking and were paired off. As the students placed their kayaks into the water, they noticed that it was crystal clear and warm. They were given time to play in circles and splash about, before heading out and touring the coastline and Bird Rock(where many species of birds nest--not to mention seal lions). At approximately 12:00 p.m., lunch was served in the cafeteria. MSA students mingled amongst the grad students and researchers as they stood in line for their well deserved meals (kayaking really works up an appetite). Following lunch, Mariners toured the reasearch labs and spoke with grad students and professors about the research they were doing on the island. One grad student was studying sea hares and how they learn. Then students went into the hyperbaric chamber, where scuba divers in need of emergency care are treated. By this time, it was time to leave. The hours passed quickly and all of the kids still wanted to do other things. But alas, it was time to go. On the boat, however, everyone was treated to a huge show. A big, blue whale was seen off the stern and then a pod of about 200 dolphins decided they were going to swim and jump all around the boat. It was a great way to end the day!
