Marina Del Rey Middle School and Performing Arts Magnet

This is my 23rd year as a music teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  From October 1996 to June 2011 I taught orchestra and band at Virgil Middle School and from August 2011 through December 2014 I taught orchestra, band, choir, general music, and piano at Hillcrest Music Magnet.  Since joining the staff of Marina del Rey Performing Arts Magnet in January 2015 I have taught orchestra, band, choir, and piano.  My teaching experiences outside of LAUSD include teaching music fundamentals at the University of Southern California for two years; teaching piano at Los Angeles City College for one year; and working at the Saturday Conservatory of Music for 20 years in multiple capacities, including piano department chair, orchestra director, board member, and program manager.  I sing soprano in the California Philharmonic Chorale and the Brentwood-Palisades Chorale and I study double bass with Dr. David Young at the Colburn School of Performing Arts.
My experiences as a student musician in LAUSD schools set me on the path to becoming a musician and music educator.  Among my thousands of former students are young adults from all walks of life, including professional musicians and fellow LAUSD music teachers.  My goal is to provide students with an understanding and enjoyment of music which they in turn will share with their own children.  In order to keep the arts alive in our public schools we must provide our students with opportunities to appreciate and value the arts because today's children are tomorrow's arts advocates.
Looking forward to a musically successful 2018-2019!

A New Projector and Sound Bar for Our Classroom

Yesterday our Donors Choose project for a projector and sound bar was completed!  Within a couple hours of funding we were notified that the projector and sound bar have already been ordered from Amazon.  They should arrive within three weeks and photos of our new equipment will be posted at https://www.donorschoose.org/missquan.  Thank you to all who made donations to this project!

We Need Your Help!

Dear parents and friends,
Our Donors Choose project has a funding deadline of August 28 and we need more donations so that we can attract benefactors to complete our project. At the end of last semester we raised $387 and we have $475 to go so that we can have a projector in our classroom. Ours is the most popular music project in Los Angeles County and we are tied for #7 in all of California! The amount of your donation is never displayed on the website, so there is no need to be embarrassed about a small donation. What we need most is to show that there are many people who support our music program. You can find the project at www.donorschoose.org/missquan. Donors Choose accepts credit cards and PayPal. If you wish to make a cash donation, please direct it to me in Room 14.
Thank you for your support!
